CASA FILOMENA, A TRACE OF HISTORY
San Francisco St., Poblacion, Pulilan, Bulacan
March 2, 2025
In a quiet street in the serene town of Pulilan, Bulacan, a modest old Spanish colonial era house stands as the haven of one family through five (5) generations. The old house was built by a businessman, Nicomedes “Amang Edes” Andan, in early 1900, on a property inherited by his wife, Filomena “Inang Menang” Cruz-Andan, from her parents. Years later, in the late 1930’s, it was renovated using old hardwood planks from the Colegio de San Juan de Letran’s old wooden building, which had been demolished.
The Ancestral Home: In time, the house witnessed the growth of the Cruz-Andan family, where Nicomedes and Filomena (First Generation) raised their three daughters – Dominga, Teodora, and the third, Prudencia who would later become a Dominican nun (Second Generation). It would not be long before the halls of the house rang again with children’s laughter, when Paulo “Amang Oyo” Caleon, a school principal in Pulilan, married Dominga or “Inang Endeng”. They had six children, Estelita, Florencia, Felipe, Luisa, Severino and Joselito (Third Generation). When Filomena and Nicomedes passed away, Inang Endeng inherited the house. The family grew further when Estelita, the eldest child, married Honorato Aguirre, who would become Vice-Mayor of Pulilan and blessed with four children: Joan Leilani, Lora Mae, Honorato Jr., and Hannah (Fourth Generation).
Into the 21st Century: When Inang Endeng passed away in 2011, the Andan ancestral home was passed on to her eldest child Estelita, a CPA, who went on to serve the government for forty (40) years, the last ten (10) of which as Deputy Commissioner of the BIR (1955 -2004) and as member of the Board of Accountancy (2003-2004). Estelita went on to become the Dean of the Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance of the Far Eastern University and President of the ASEAN Federation of Accountants (2014-2015). On March 17, 2023, she was one of the one hundred (100) notable CPAs in the Philippines who were honored with the Accountancy Centenary Award of Excellence during the centennial celebration of the Accountancy Profession (1923-2023) at the historic Manila Hotel.
The Millenials and the Zoomers. The youngest (Fifth Generation) members of the clan are the six grandchildren of Lita and Ato: Adrienne Mae (now a lawyer) and Aidan Louie, children of Honorato Jr. and Armi; Samantha (now a Doctor of Medicine) and Gaby, daughters of Dr. Mae and Dr. Rainier de Guzman; and Cassandra and Isabelle, daughters of Leilani and Alec Ekanayake. The children of the other Caleon siblings who enjoy the comfort of the place every now and then are: Florencia’s Roberto, Jose and Stephanie; Felipe’s Wilfredo, Joey, Heidi and Grace; Luisa’s Jaxon and Gazle; Severino’s Athena, Caloy, Paulo and Hana.
Casa Filomena, now a Doll Museum and Global UNAP UN Peace Center. The Casa has been partly converted into a doll museum. Replicas of the seventeen (17) Philippine Presidents are exhibited in an antique cabinet with historical events and traditional industries in Bulacan for the students and guests to appreciate. And now, March 2, 2025, the place has been declared a GLOBAL UNAP UN PEACE CENTER by the Global United Nations Association of the Philippines. Praise and thank God! To Him be the glory!
